wishing well, 2016, 36 x 60 x 28 inches, found antique plastic tiles, foam board, grout, coins.
A wishing well, rooted in European folklore, is traditionally believed to grant any wish spoken into it. In this work, I have constructed a wishing well that resembles a bathtub, designed only for small children. The well becomes a symbol of vulnerability, reflecting a shared cultural tradition of washing the dead before burial, a final act of care and ritual. This piece serves as an emblematic memorial to the countless unnamed children—among the most vulnerable victims of the brutal bombings in Syria and other conflict zones. The work invites contemplation on innocence lost and the tragic, often unseen, suffering of children caught in the crossfire of war, offering a poignant reminder of consequences of violence.
